CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) – A newer security program is coming to Cedar Falls Schools, following the concern of increased violence around the nation.

On Monday, March 21, the Raptor Visitor Management System will be present in all Cedar Falls Schools giving educators a better understanding of who walks through their front doors.

The sound of a shutting door was once a moment of security for most parents and educators, but it’s not now.

Cedar Falls Communications Coordinator, Janelle Darst, said with so many active parents and volunteers passing through their doors, it creates an opportunity for the wrong person to slip through.

That’s why they will soon rely on the Raptor Visitor Management System.

“This is a great way for us to keep track of those people, but then also scan to see if there are any things we need to be aware of when people come into our buildings,” Darst said.

When you stop in a Cedar Falls School all you do is show the front office your ID and then they’ll print you a badge.

When you’re ready to leave, all you have to do is take it off and give it back to the office.

“They look you over. They know who you are. They’re very careful, and I enjoy that. I like that,” Avery Straw’s Grandmother, Connie, said.

Connie Straw says she already feels like the school does a good job keeping students safe, but admits times are very different now than when she was in school.

“You never know who is having the bad day that it might go really bad that it might go really bad quickly. But it’s OK to ring the buzzer and sign in, and have them know how long you’re going to be there,” Straw said.

According to the school’s secretary, it only takes a few minutes to enter your ID and badge into the system.

All nine Cedar Falls schools will have the system by March 21st.
