AVERY COUNTY — For the 2023 school year, Avery County Schools implemented a new safety feature for all their schools called RAPTOR.

When a visitor comes on campus, they scan their driver’s license, which then runs a quick background check on that person. It checks the Sex Offender Registry and other criminal background databases to determine if that person is safe to remain on the campus.

After personally using the system on the first day of school, many found the system to be a user-friendly program.

“This is another layer of safety measures to screen visitors on campus at our schools,” ACS Superintendent Dr. Dan Brigman said. “We are excited to have this feature and want to thank all our parents and stakeholders as we get it up and running.”

According to the RAPTOR Technologies website, “The RAPTOR integrated suite of school safety software and services along with the School Pass automated attendance and dismissal products covers the full spectrum of school safety.”
