School safety is a critical concern for administrators nationwide. The tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 brought this issue into sharp focus, leading to significant legislative changes. One such development is Alyssa’s Law.
This legislation mandates the installation of silent panic alarms in schools to enhance emergency response times. For school administrators, understanding and implementing this law is crucial to ensuring the safety of students and staff.

Brief History of Alyssa's Law
Named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a student who tragically lost her life during the Parkland school shooting, Alyssa’s Law was first passed in New Jersey in 2019. It requires public elementary and secondary schools to install silent panic alarms that directly notify law enforcement during emergencies. Since then, several other states, including Texas, New York, Florida, Tennessee, Utah, and Oklahoma have enacted similar legislation.

Legislation for Alyssa’s Law is pending now in 9 states, with Oklahoma being the most recent state to sign their bill into law on June 14, 2024.
The primary goal of Alyssa’s Law is to reduce emergency response times, thereby potentially saving lives during critical situations. By providing a direct link to law enforcement, these alarms enable faster, more coordinated responses to threats.
Maximizing the Impact of Alyssa's Law
The implementation of Alyssa’s Law has had a profound impact on school safety across the states that have adopted it. Key benefits include:
- Reduced Response Times: By providing a direct link to law enforcement, panic alarms significantly reduce the time it takes for first responders to arrive on the scene.
- Enhanced Coordination: Integrated systems like Raptor Alert facilitate better communication between school staff and emergency personnel, leading to more coordinated and effective responses.
- Increased Peace of Mind: Knowing that their schools are equipped with advanced safety measures helps reassure parents, students, and staff.
Implementing Alyssa’s Law effectively requires leveraging advanced technology. Here are some innovative solutions that schools can adopt to comply with the law:
- Silent Panic Alarms: Systems like Raptor Alert enable staff to trigger alerts discreetly from any device, including desktop computers and mobile phones. This ensures that help can be summoned quickly and efficiently.
- Wearable Technology: Devices like the Alertus Wearable Panic Button integrate seamlessly with existing systems—including Raptor Alert—allowing staff to call for help with just one click. These wearables provide an added layer of security, especially during dynamic situations.
- Mass Notification Systems: Tools such as Vivi-enabled displays deliver customizable alerts to all connected devices when integrated with an emergency management system. These systems ensure that everyone on campus is informed about the emergency and can act accordingly.
