Signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on January 22, 2025, House Bill 5549 mandates that by no later than October 1, 2026, the board of a school district or intermediate school district, board of directors of a public school academy, or governing body of a nonpublic school shall ensure that each school under its jurisdiction has a behavior threat assessment and management team in place. House Bills 4095 and 4096 were both enacted on December 31, 2024. House Bill 4095 requires public and nonpublic schools to implement the standardized response terminology described in House Bill 4096 by the 2026-27 school year. The terminology must include direction for usage in response to certain situations, and direction concerning the use of a color-coding system to indicate when to use the terminology.
