Celebrating Volunteer Recognition Day: 5 Ways They Assist K-12 Schools

Celebrate the hard work of volunteers in k-12 schools

Volunteer Recognition Day is a yearly celebration that occurs on April 20. On this day, we show our appreciation for everything that volunteers do to help schools manage their operations and ensure a safe learning environment for students.

What are some of the different ways volunteers help schools?

  1. Tutoring – the COVID-19 pandemic caused a major disruption to learning, as students had to adjust to classes shifting from in-person to online. Schools responded to this by recruiting volunteers for tutoring and enrichment programs
  2. Mentorships – Mentorships are a great way for volunteers to build strong relationships with students. Now more than ever, some students are struggling as a result of the trauma, isolation, and anxiety they experienced during the pandemic. Mentors can be trusted resources for students and provide them with support.

3. Event planning – Volunteers can assist with fundraising, chaperoning field trips, and event/program planning and coordination, even during summer months for school enrichment programs

4. Ensuring a peaceful learning environment – Dads on Duty USA formed after 23 students were disciplined for participating in a series of fights that occurred over less than 72 hours at a high school in Louisiana. This is a good example of how schools can recruit parents to monitor their hallways, buses, and playgrounds for safety hazards. Doing this should strengthen students’ sense of security and allow them to focus more of their attention on learning.

5. Operating disaster shelters – During severe weather incidents, it’s common for schools to open as disaster shelters for their communities. When this happens, schools may need the help of volunteers to ensure smooth operation and the safety of every guest.
