New York Alyssa's Law

New York Schools Urged to Install Panic Alarm Systems

New York Alyssa's Law

Senate Bill S.7132B, known as “Alyssa’s Law”, was signed into law on June 23, 2022. Effective immediately, schools across the State of New York are required to consider the use of silent panic alarm systems when conducting reviews and development of their school safety plans. The implementation of this type of system designed to directly alert law enforcement and first responders in the area, can save precious minutes in an active shooter situation.

“Having these silent alarms, we know from the research that they can work, especially with mass shooters, seconds matter, let alone minutes.” New York Assemblywoman Pat Fahy

A Closer Look at the Requirements

Raptor Alert, a silent panic alarm system, expedites and streamlines emergency response by allowing users to initiate an emergency directly through 911 and provide critical information to first responders, law enforcement, and campus personnel.

Schools are required to consider the use of silent panic alarm systems when conducting review and development of their school safety plans.
Raptor Alert is a silent panic alarm system that works on the devices your schools use every day.
When developing a building level emergency response plan, the building-level emergency response team may include the installation of a panic alarm system as part of their internal and external communication systems in emergencies.
Alerts are immediately delivered to a custom list of recipients, which can include administrators, staff members, and first responders. Users are able to communicate through real-time group messaging.
A panic alarm system shall mean “a silent security system signal generated by the manual activation of a device intended to signal a life-threating or emergency situation requiring a response from law enforcement.”
Designed to work under duress with simple navigation built in collaboration with critical response and emergency services experts, users can initiate a discreet, silent alert with the touch of a button. The system automatically sends the user’s name, callback number, precise location within the school, and other details to dispatchers when 911 is called. Users can also directly text 911 when they need to be discreet. Raptor supports standard E911 services, is RapidSOS Ready™, and is fully compatible with all standard Public Safety Answering Points and emergency calling infrastructure.
A panic alarm system may include one of more of the following “wired panic button or buttons, wireless panic button, or a mobile or computer application.”
Users can quickly initiate a response to a school- or district-wide emergency from any web enabled mobile or desktop device. Alerts provide the type, location, time, and who initiated the emergency and can be sent across text message, computer desktop alert, email, voice call, and push notification. Push notifications can play an audible alarm even when the device is in silent or do-not-disturb mode.
