MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The Hastings School District is expanding a security system which screens visitors for sex offenders to all schools this fall.

The Raptor System runs an instant background check on all people entering a school and compares it with registered sex offender databases from around the country. A person must show their drivers license and the background check takes about 30 seconds.

“It’s not tied to your motor vehicle record, it’s not tied to any other criminal records, so for instance you can be an armed robber and not show up on this registry, it’s specifically looking for sex offenders,” said Deanna Werner with Hastings Public Schools.

Since the district started using the system at some schools more than a year ago, they have identified three sex offenders.
