NOVEMBER 20, 2015 – AURORA, ILLINOIS – A convicted sex offender, working as a delivery driver for a North Aurora restaurant, was charged with two felonies on Monday after he went to an Aurora school to deliver food, police said.

Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said that Michael Smith, 40, 1500 block of Electric Park Drive, Sycamore, showed up at the Illinois Math and Science Academy, 1500 block of West Sullivan Road, around 4:50 p.m. on Monday to deliver food to an employee at the school.

When he arrived, Smith offered to take the food past the front desk and into a secured area of the school to deliver it to the employee, Ferrelli said.

As part of protocol, IMSA security officers ran Smith’s name through a computer program that instantly screens for sex offenders and other people who should not enter the school. When they did, Smith came up as a registered sex offender, Ferrelli said.

Smith was detained by IMSA security and Aurora police were called, Ferrelli said.

Police later learned that Smith had failed to update his sex offender registration to reflect his employment at the North Aurora restaurant. He was charged with felony failure to update his employment with local authorities, and for being a sex offender on school grounds, Ferrelli said.

According to the Illinois Sex Offender Registry, Smith was 32 when he was charged with and later convicted of indecent solicitation of a child and soliciting a juvenile prostitute. According to records, his victim’s age was 14.
